Comparing

d\phi=\frac{\partial{\phi}}{\partial{x}}dx+\frac{\partial{\phi}}{\partial{y}}dyand

d\phi=u\ dx+v\ dywe have

u=\frac{\partial{\phi}}{\partial{x}}\ v=\frac{\partial{\phi}}{\partial{y}}

Thus,

\xi(\phi)=a\frac{\partial{\phi}}{\partial{x}}+b\frac{\partial{\phi}}{\partial{y}}or

\xi(\phi)=au+bv
